Dear Hunter,
You had a pretty awful day yesterday. You woke up with your private area swollen. This seems to keep happening to you. It’s even baffling Dr. Steele. The last time this happened he did an ultrasound and thankfully they didn’t find anything. Dr. Steele says that anything I needed to worry about would have shown up on the ultrasound so he doesn’t think the swelling is something I should stress out about, but he referred us to a pediatric urologist to see if we can’t figure out what’s going on.
This was the week that Dr. Steele got his new office, so he’s playing catch up with all of his patients. So it would be about our luck that you would wake up on a Friday with swelling! We had to go see one of his colleagues and she was busy too so we were there for two long and boring hours. I thought you and Connor were going to lose it. At the end of the appointment we got our referral for the urologist and orders to go get your blood drawn and a urine sample bag to take home so they could run a bunch of tests for the urologist to have on hand.
We go across the hall to get your blood drawn at the lab and that’s when your bad day got worse. When we handed the lady the order form she saw that you needed to give a urine sample. Then she handed me a cup and asked me if you were going to be able to go pee. I looked at her like she was crazy. It must have been a long time for her since she’s had a one year old, but I can promise you there is no way that I can get you to pee on command, let alone get it into a cup! I had to explain to her that the good doctor wanted me to get a bag to put in your diaper at home.
When you were just born they had to take blood from you every couple of days for a few weeks because of your bili levels. They always poked your heel- you would cry- but the blood would just drip into the vile. This time though you were old enough that they actually stuck the needle into a vein in your arm! I had to hold you down and hold your arm straight. You were crying harder than I’ve ever heard you. I’m sure it hurt, but I also think it’s scary for you to have to be held in one position with no control over your body.
While you were getting the gauze put on your arm to stop the bleeding Connor bust through the door. He ran straight for you and put his hand on your leg and just looked at you with these sympathetic eyes that said ,”what happened brother?”
Daddy said that he was trying to get back there the whole time Hunter was crying but that he kept stopping him until finally Connor made it clear that he was going back to check on his brother and there was no stopping him… so Daddy let him run back there.
I finally got you to stop crying, but all the way to the car you would periodically look down at the band-aid and it would make you start crying all over again.
You fell asleep on the way home- brother did too. We carried you into the house and you both slept for two hours! Then we packed your bags and we went to have dinner with Kendall. It was pretty fun. We took a bath over there. Clayton is big enough for the tub now so we had all four of you in the bathtub at one time! It was pretty dang cute.
I’m sorry you had such a bad day yesterday. I know today is going to be much better! We’re going to play outside lots and it should even be nice enough outside to get in your pool for awhile!
I love you and love you buddy!
